THE SUSAN TRUST
The Susan Trust is a registered charity which was established in 2005 to restore and maintain the lighter
Susan
on the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation in Essex. It is a partnership of experienced organisations which have come together in
Susan
's interest to ensure a secure future for her as a unique and historic vessel. The Patron of The Susan Trust is Lord Petre, Lord Lieutenant of Essex. The trustees include representatives from the Inland Waterways Association, the Chelmer Canal Trust, the Chelmer Lighter Preservation Society and Chelmsford Borough Council. All these organisations, apart from the Chelmer Canal Trust, have owned
Susan
in the past and have experience in maintaining and operating her.
The aims of the Trust are to restore and preserve
Susan
for the public benefit as the only example of a working wooden lighter purpose built for use on the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation and to advance the education of the public in the history of the Navigation by exhibiting and operating
Susan
.
The Susan Trust is a corporate member of the Inland Waterways Association.
